Wood CARVING in the Philippines is a tradition dating back to pre-colonial times. Native Filipinos carved boats, plows, arrows, spears, and other essential items, often creating ornamental patterns for the use of the tribal hierarchy and to celebrate special occasions.

The word PAGBURNAYAN derives from the root word burnay. It refers to Vigan ceramic pots that are handcrafted. These clays are known as Bantog clays. They're excavated in the city's western barangays. Historical Background: The burnay-making industry dates back to pre-colonial times, when Chinese immigrants settled in Vigan. They developed the technique of creating earthenware with grade A clay found in abundance in Vigan's western region. Its previous uses included serving tea as a container for salt, brown sugar, water, local wine (basi), and bagoong (fermented fish). Basi and bagoong are supposed to taste better when stored within burnays. Artist: Fidel Go was named National Folk Artist by the National Commission on Culture and Arts in 1990. He is the proprietor of Ruby Pottery and has continued to practice and perpetuate the burnay-making craft to this day.
